A cryptoquote is a famous line hidden behind a letter-substitution cipher: every A in the original has become some other letter, consistently, all the way through. Crack the pattern and the quotation falls out.

These are lines you have almost certainly heard — a philosopher, an astronaut, two presidents — which is the point. Recognising the shape of a familiar phrase is half the technique, and the attribution underneath tells you who said it once you are done.

Start with the short words. A one-letter word is A or I, and the apostrophe-S and three-letter words give up THE and AND quickly. Each puzzle hands you a starter letter or two for free; the harder ones hand you fewer.
